JMA Named 2011 Custom Builder of the Year

Custom Builder of the Year Magazine Cover

"Each year, the editors of Custom Home select a Custom Builder of the Year to be the subject of an in-depth profile feature. While the program is more a story than a formal award, we invest a great deal of effort in identifying subjects whose business philosophy, management practices, and professional integrity make them role models for the industry. Jim Murphy and Jay True, partners in Jim Murphy & Associates in Santa Rosa, Calif., are richly deserving of such recognition. Drawing on Murphy's decades of experience in custom home building and True's expertise in commercial construction, their company provides its clients both artisanal craftsmanship and industrial-strength project management. But its culture is defined even more by the personalities of the two principals. Stressing an ethic of excellence, accountability, and humility, Murphy and True have built a business whose financial success goes hand in hand with service to its employees, its craft, and its community." — Bruce Snider, Senior Editor of Custom Home, Hanley Wood Business Media

NAHB 2009 SAFE Award - First Place in the Nation

"Ensuring a safe worksite is of paramount importance to home builders across the nation, and JMA's commitment to protecting and educating their workers sets a shining example for the housing industry." — Colin Campbell, chair of the NAHB Construction Safety & Health Committee and a builder from Charleston, S.C.

"I have very much appreciated the opportunity to have worked with such an outstanding organization as JMA over the past seven years. I feel privileged to have been a part of the continuing safety success that you have worked to achieve over this period. Having interaction with literally hundreds of contractors in California over the past 22 years, I can truly say that Jim Murphy & Associates has been my favorite company to work with - not only because of your strong commitment to safety but for all of the ways you conduct business - from community outreach activities to respect for and recognition of employees to partnering efforts with both subs and various service providers. For these reasons JMA definitely deserves the results it has achieved on the safety and accident prevention front. And I continue to use your company as a prime role model for all of my other clients who feel that accidents are "inevitable" and don't believe that a zero incident culture is possible." — Rich Lawler, CSP, Principal Consultant, Arlington Associates LLC

Jim Murphy and Associates (JMA) is honored to receive first place in the nation in the National Association of Home Builder's 2009 Safety Award For Excellence (SAFE). The SAFE awards recognize the achievements of builders and trade contractors in the United States who have developed and implemented high quality construction safety programs, as well as honoring other individuals and organizations who have made successful efforts to advance safety in the home building industry. We received the award in the category of Single Family Builder (less than 10 home starts per year). Being recognized as the national first place winner in our category means that NAHB acknowledges JMA's leadership and commitment to improve construction safety.

"This is an award in which the entire company can take pride, but especially our field crew and superintendents," said Jim Murphy, president of JMA.

Our program consists of safety education, training, monitoring and correcting, as well as recognition of safety achievements. The owners and supervisors at JMA have made safety the top priority for our employees, changing our culture from "that's the way construction is," to "accidents are avoidable." JMA has made it "contractor cool" to be responsible for one's own safety and the safety of others on the jobsite.

We have also been recognized by Allied North America Insurance Brokers for our zero accident safety record in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Jim Murphy and Associates was recognized during the NAHB Safety Award For Excellence Reception on January 20, 2010, at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas. Companies from all across the country were also honored at the ceremony.

Custom Home — Pacesetter Awards

"As the recently retired President & CEO of Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies, I have witnessed first hand the very worst and the very best General Contractors in the United States...JMA has the same passion for excellence and are consistently looking for ways to improve their operation as they did when I first met them. THEY TRULY HAVE NO PEER." — JMA client, in his letter nominating JMA for a 2006

Custom Home Pacesetter Award.

Although our primary goal is to serve our clients, it is wonderful to be recognized by our peers for the quality of our work and the value in our process. When we decided to compete for a 2006 Custom Home Pacesetter Award, we were pleasantly blown away with the words of praise in the nomination letters we received from clients, architects and subcontractors.

Co-sponsored by Custom Home Magazine and the NAHB Custom Home Builders Committee, the Pacesetter Awards program honors custom builders who not only excel in the business of custom home building, but also bring new ideas, more effective procedures, and higher standards to their businesses.

Nominated for two Pacesetters, in Management and Customer Service, we were awarded in Management, and told we could have won in either category but the competition limits a company to no more than one award per lifetime.

Reading these letters of nomination, you learn what is important to us and how our efforts foster strong relationships and desirable project outcomes.
